Are You Brave Enough to Try These Healthy Foods?
Have you ever walked down a grocery store aisle, seen an item and thought, ‘I’ve never heard of that?’ Well join the club.
There are so many foods in your local grocery store that help keep you fit and strong that you might not know about. Just the names alone might send you running down a different aisle back to the familiar.
So we decided to grab a few of these not-so common foods and beverages and put our Reebok employees through a healthy foods blind taste test, getting their initial reactions to five somewhat strange options.
“In the moment, I may have made funny faces, but looking back there were several things I can see adding into my meals like the goji berries on salads or making crisps out of the kohlrabi,” says Reebok employee, Lauren Lejeune.
The experience gave them a chance to try things they never would have normally.
“What was really cool to me was once I got over the shock of that shot of vinegar I actually had a lot of energy and felt good the rest of the day,” says Reebok employee, Brett Bartuch.
While Lejeune and Bartuch may not have loved all the things they tried, it sure was fun watching them guess what the heck they were eating.
“Don’t take it on all at once,” she says. “Make it a goal to try a new food a month.”
Swan says it’s no secret that diet and exercise go hand in hand and that nutrition is crucial to staying fit.
“As the classic saying goes, ‘You can’t out exercise a bad diet,’” she says. “If your diet and nutrition are not in line, it doesn’t matter how much you work out, you will not see the results you want in your body.”
We had Swan breakdown the benefits of the five choices from the taste test and tell us what they bring to the table (so to speak) when it comes to nutrition.
Here’s hoping these tips help make your next trip to the grocery store an adventurous and healthy one!
These superfood berries are packed full of antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and trace minerals and help you fight disease, improve digestion and manage weight.
Serving Suggestion: They’re so versatile and can be eaten on their own or paired with almonds in a trail mix or even thrown in smoothies, granola or on top of ice cream or smoothie bowls.
Kombucha contains a colony of probiotic bacteria that is super beneficial for the gut and also contains b-vitamins, enzymes and a high concentration of acetic, gluconic and lactic acid.
Serving Suggestion: It is served as a sparkling drink, much like a healthy soda. Be wary of the sugar content in your kombucha. It shouldn’t have more than 4-5g/serving.
(Sidenote: Both Reebok employees chose kombucha as their favorite by a landslide, who would have thought!)
Surprisingly enough this flour has 3x the amount of protein as a steak and 2x the amount of chicken. Before you dismiss this “weird” food, consider that insects are a very common food in most of the world outside of the Western world.
Serving Suggestion: Most commonly eaten in powdered form, cricket “flour” and thrown in smoothies, and protein bars.
This hearty vegetable comes from the cabbage family and boosts health benefits such as improvement of digestion, protection from cancer, immune system boost, increased circulation, stronger bones, improved vision health, and weight loss.
Serving Suggestion: It can be eaten raw or cooked and tastes somewhat like the stem of broccoli but more palatable and softer. The roots/stems are used in salads similar to the way carrots or broccoli are eaten and the leaves are generally interchanged for kale or spinach.
Apple Cider Vinegar (crowd favorite)
This super drink has powerful healing compounds and be used to remedy acid reflux, improve diabetes, lower cholesterol and kill many types of bacteria.
Serving Suggestion: Typically it is consumed in the form of shots, but there are a few companies emerging creating drinks out of the vinegar.
