DJ Dillon Francis Brings CrossFit on Tour
There’s no denying that Dillon Francis is one of the hottest DJ’s and record producers in the world right now. As house music and EDM have grown in the popularity over the last few years, Dillon’s celebrity has grown in tandem.
At the age of 29, he’s already toured internationally, released multiple EPs and an album, and garnered a loyal Instagram following of 1.5 million fans.
In fact it’s through Instagram that Dillon’s followers may have noticed a new, and perhaps unexpected, passion. CrossFit.
“I knew that Mike [Finn], my tour manager, did CrossFit so I’ve always joked around with him about how CrossFitters feel the need to talk about it all the time,” says Dillon.
“Mike and I started chatting more and getting together every time he came into Boston,” says Murphy. “In August of 2015, I flew out to Vegas to meet up with him for one of Dillon’s shows. Dillon is obviously a celebrity so I wanted to be cognizant of his time and keep to myself.”
Two months later, Dillon had a show at UMass Amherst which brought both him and Finn back to Massachusetts.
“Mike invited me to UMass to see the show and do a workout with him beforehand,” says Murphy. “We were working out by the tour bus and Dillon came outside and started joking around with us, saying he could do what we were doing. Next thing I knew, I was putting Dillon through a workout.”

“At first I was like, ‘Oh that’s not that bad,’” reflects Dillon. “And then 40 air squats in, I was looking at Conor like, ‘I hate you.’”
“The next day Mike messaged me that Dillon couldn’t stop talking about how good he was feeling and that wanted to bring me out on more tour stops with him,” says Murphy.
“Previously, I was working with a personal trainer doing some plyometric work and weight training,” says Dillon. “The thing I’ve gotten out of CrossFit that I never had when I went to a personal trainer is more energy. You finish a workout and you’re like, ‘How did I just do that?’ but then a half hour later once I’m in the shower, I just feel super rejuvenated and have more energy than I did before the workout.”

“With my job, I need to have energy. I have to be able to stay up late and still bring it,” he continues.
Over the last two months, Dillon’s desire to bring Murphy out on tour with him has become a reality. Murphy has flown out to tour stops in Las Vegas and Detroit to take the DJ and his team through daily CrossFit WODs, and he already has several more trips booked to meet Dillon at future stops along his tour.
“We’ve always wanted to see what it would be like to have a trainer out traveling with us, and to see how well I could do on tour with that,” says Dillon.
“Touring is one of the worst things possible for your body. You have limited time to eat, limited time to sleep, limited time to work on music, let alone work out. So Conor being out on tour really helps with that time management because then I can work out whenever fits in my schedule.”
“CrossFit is also perfect for my time schedule,” adds Dillon. “I’ve always wanted to work out, but I travel so much and just have such little time to myself that finding the time becomes difficult. But CrossFit puts you through these short, super high intensity workouts, so I have time to fit them in. Being able to fit in a hard workout in just 30 minutes and not have my energy drained is key.”

Dillon adds that Murphy’s recent visits have only left him hungrier to work out.
“I’ve been stopping in at CrossFit gyms when I can,” Dillon says. "I just went to BRICK when I was in LA and going there was really fun. It’s really social as well. And Conor has been sending us workouts every day so Mike and I have done a couple of those on our own on the days we can’t get to classes.”
When asked what motivates him, Dillon points out that it’s all about developing habits he can carry with him through the long haul.
“I’ve always been in somewhat good shape, but I’m 29 now so if anything, it’s going to get harder and harder later on in life to stay in shape if I don’t start building these habits now.”
He’s also hopeful that by making health and fitness a priority in his own life, it will rub off on those around him.
“I think if it’s constantly happening and CrossFit is really becoming part of my schedule, we’ll be able to convince others around me to work out with us,” Dillon says.
“And if I can get fit while on this crazy tour schedule, I think it shows that any person at home could probably get even fitter than I can.”

Murphy is quick to express the same sentiment.
“It’s awesome to see someone in Dillon’s position really want to give something a chance and be all in.”
“Touring with Dillon has really opened my eyes to the fact that as a DJ, your job is to entertain,” says Murphy. “It’s a job that requires him to bring high energy for multiple hours at a time. He’s not at these shows just to party like a lot of the people watching are. He’s expected to perform and to bring enthusiasm and energy, and CrossFit is giving Dillon more energy than he’s had before.”
